Event theme is Digital Transformation: Enabling Industry 4.0 and includes a 1 & ½ day conference on 22 & 23 June covering all the latest in road and rail design, development, and management strategies. Program will also focus on digital transformation of design practices and processes for land transport, how that transforms into effective project development, and subsequent asset management.

Roads and rail development projects continue to be among the biggest infrastructure projects in the region attracting significant investment. Efficient road and rail infrastructure are a major priority for governments as part of ambitious urban development and smart cities. Smart and cost-effective methods for design, development and management of roads, highways, railways, and bridges is now top of the agenda.

Digital transformation, utilization, and adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and digital technology is now ready to play a significant role in the context of road and rail infrastructure. New design, development and asset management technology is changing the way roads and rail construction and infrastructure management operate and create greater efficiency. Open Standards BIM and digital design and development technology is now very much at the forefront of driving change.

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has the Middle East and North Africa's first BIM centre. This follows the launch in 2015 by the RTA of a BIM platform that deals with assets information in an all-inclusive method commencing from the design stage.

buildingSMART International IFC Road Project

The recently announced buildingSMART International IFC Road Project is now making significant progress. The final conceptual model was recently published, and the project will soon enter phase two of the IFC schema extension development. By the end of 2020, the IFC Extension (MVD) will be ready for implementation. The next step will be the implementation and certification.

The IFC Road Project is supported by national road authorities including the Swedish Transport Administration, the Finnish Transport Authority and the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure along with other industry experts for the express purpose of defining open digital standards for highway model development and exchange across the entire asset lifecycle. Phase 1 was completed in 2018 with publishing of a Requirements Analysis Report and Road Process Map. Phase 2 began in early 2019 and includes the development of the schema extension.

buildingSMART IFC Rail Project

IFC Rail is buildingSMART’s largest project to date being the development of a common strategic goal to digitize rail infrastructure. This major project delivered under the umbrella of buildingSMART International and adhering to Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes, began to explore the needs and requirements for this project.
